A towering figure in the UK’s folk and acoustic scene, Knightley has built a career spanning over 30 years, with more than 30 albums and 4,000 live performances to his name.
Raised in the West Country, Knightley began performing at 16 and spent his early career immersed in London’s rock scene. In 1994, he co-founded Show of Hands with Phil Beer, earning critical acclaim for their fusion of traditional English folk with contemporary social themes. Their songs—like The Galway Farmer and Cousin Jack—have become folk staples, with the latter now taught in Cornish schools.
Known for his powerful lyrics and advocacy through song, Knightley has addressed rural inequality (Country Life), economic injustice (Arrogance, Ignorance and Greed—winner of Best Song at the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards), and the changing face of Britain. He’s been dubbed “the gravel-voiced spokesman of the rural poor” for his unflinching storytelling.
In 2014, he pioneered the “Grow Your Own Gig” tour—empowering communities to host concerts without financial risk, and reaffirming his belief in the power of grassroots music.
Beyond the stage, Knightley served as Artistic Director for the poignant Shrouds of the Somme installation in 2016 and collaborated on projects such as The Great War album with actors Jim Carter and Imelda Staunton. He holds an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Plymouth University and was named an Honorary Rifleman by the 6th Battalion The Rifles.
In 2024, Knightley launched his first major solo tour since Show of Hands’ retirement, featuring material from his forthcoming album The Winter Yards. With his trademark wit, social insight, and lyrical precision, he remains one of the most vital voices in English folk music today.
